Pale Ales and Blonde Ales
The pale ale is the gateway drug of the craft beer world — hop-forward enough to signal something different from mainstream lager, but approachable enough not to alienate newcomers. Spanish craft breweries have perfected the style, producing pale ales that range from softly floral and easy-drinking to assertively bitter and aromatic.
Blonde ales (rubia artesanal) sit closer to lager in their clean profile but with greater depth and character — a brilliant choice for someone making their first steps away from mass-market beer. Many Spanish blonde ales use local ingredients or regional hop varieties to add a distinctive local character.
Wheat Beers (Cervezas de Trigo)
Wheat beers are a summer staple across Spain. Whether in the German Hefeweizen style (banana and clove notes from the yeast) or the crisper Belgian witbier style (coriander, orange peel), Spanish craft breweries produce excellent wheat beers suited to warm weather and food pairing.
Several Spanish brewers have created locally inspired wheat beers using Galician rye, Valencian citrus peel, or Andalucian spices to create versions that go beyond the traditional styles.
India Pale Ales (IPAs)
As discussed in our dedicated IPA guide, the India Pale Ale is the dominant force in Spanish craft beer. Spanish IPAs range from classic bitter West Coast styles to soft, tropical New England IPAs and everything in between. If you try only one type of Spanish craft beer, make it a well-made IPA from an independent brewery.
Stouts and Porters
Dark beers have a dedicated following in Spain, particularly in the north where the climate and food culture are more aligned with the rich, roasted flavours of stouts and porters. Spanish craft stouts range from straightforward dry Irish-style stouts to elaborate pastry stouts loaded with chocolate, coffee, vanilla and even local honey or chilli.
Milk stouts (with added lactose for sweetness and body) and oatmeal stouts (smooth and silky) are particularly popular. In winter, an Imperial Stout from a Spanish brewery is one of the most impressive and satisfying beers the country's craft scene produces.
Sour and Wild Ales
Spain's wine and vinegar heritage has made its craft brewers unusually comfortable with acidity. Catalan breweries in particular have developed a strong sour beer scene, producing kettle sours (sharp, fast-fermented and very food-friendly), mixed fermentation ales (complex, earthy, funky) and the occasional spontaneously fermented beer aged in wine barrels.
Berliner Weisse (a light, tart wheat style) and Gose (salty, sour, refreshing) are widely produced and have found a devoted following in Spain's warmer regions.
Lagers and Pilsners
While lager dominates the mainstream Spanish beer market, craft lagers are a different proposition entirely. Spanish craft pilsners are made with attention to water chemistry, premium malt and noble hops — producing beers that share a format with Mahou or Estrella but offer a completely different depth of flavour.
Czech and German lager styles are the most common reference points, but some Spanish craft brewers have used locally grown cereals or Spanish-origin hops to produce pilsners and kellerbiers that are distinctly of their place.
Experimental and Seasonal Beers
Many of Spain's most creative craft breweries release seasonal and experimental beers that push the boundaries of the medium. Look out for saffron-infused beers from La Mancha, wines-and-beer hybrids from Catalan wineries-turned-breweries, Basque txakoli-influenced ales, and barrel-aged beers that have spent time in Rioja, Ribera del Duero or Jerez sherry casks.
These experimental releases are often small-batch and sell out quickly — another reason to buy from a specialist online retailer that sources directly from the breweries.
