Down Under: Australian Hop Heritage
Galaxy was developed by Hop Products Australia (HPA) and released commercially in 2009. It is a proprietary variety bred from Perle and a selected tetraploid male parent. The growing conditions in Australia's Rostrevor and Boonah hop-growing regions — distinct soil, sunlight and temperature profiles compared to Yakima or Hallertau — contribute to Galaxy's unique character.
Despite being a relative newcomer, Galaxy quickly became Australia's flagship hop variety and one of the most sought-after hops globally, particularly after the explosion of the New England IPA style in the mid-2010s.
Flavour Profile: Passionfruit and Beyond
Galaxy's defining note is passionfruit — it is more intensely passionfruit-forward than any other major hop variety. Alongside this, expect citrus (grapefruit, orange), peach, stone fruit and a mild creamy or vanilla-like quality that softens the overall impression. The aroma is intense and immediately tropical.
Alpha acids of 13–15 % make it a capable dual-purpose hop. Total oil content of 2.4–3.8 ml/100g is among the highest of any commercially available variety, explaining its reputation for explosive aroma impact. High levels of geraniol and citronellol contribute to the peachy, floral dimension.
The NEIPA Revolution and Galaxy
The rise of the New England IPA in the 2010s created a global demand for soft, juicy, tropical hops — and Galaxy delivered exactly that. Its high oil content and passionfruit-citrus character proved ideal for the hazy, unfiltered, dry-hop-heavy beers that define the style.
Many of the world's most celebrated NEIPAs feature Galaxy prominently — either as the lead dry-hop hop or as part of a tropical blend. Breweries from Vermont to London to Tokyo have made Galaxy a signature ingredient.
Using Galaxy in Brewing
Galaxy's intensity demands respect. As a bittering addition, its high alpha acids provide clean, efficient bitterness. As a late/whirlpool addition it begins to express the passionfruit and citrus oils. As a dry hop — its best application — it transforms a beer with one of the most distinctive aromas in the brewer's toolkit.
Classic Galaxy pairings: Galaxy + Citra (passionfruit-tropical powerhouse), Galaxy + Mosaic (deep tropical complexity), Galaxy + El Dorado (sweet stone fruit and tropical), Galaxy + Vic Secret (Australian tropical synergy). Because of its intensity, even modest additions make a noticeable difference.
Sustainability and Southern Hemisphere Sourcing
One of Galaxy's advantages for European and Northern Hemisphere brewers is its harvesting schedule — Australian hops are harvested in March-April (Southern Hemisphere autumn), providing fresh hops to brewers six months offset from Northern Hemisphere harvests. This makes fresh Galaxy available twice yearly when combined with both hemispheres, reducing reliance on older pelletised stock.
Hop Products Australia has invested significantly in sustainable growing practices, and Galaxy remains one of the most commercially successful proprietary varieties in the world. For craft beer drinkers, it represents the frontier of what hops can do — intensely aromatic, undeniably delicious.
